Raffle tickets!
Each Rule 9 member will be selling raffle tickets to raise money for the club and we will be giving away some great prizes. Look for tickets in late April or early May...you'll want to buy one to get in on the action!

Nottoway opens up to Chowan!
Access to the Chowan River was voted in after several unsuccessful attempts in previous years. Rule 9 members will now be allowed to fish the Chowan River during our Nottoway tournament. Members who choose to fish the Chowan during this tournament must purchase a North Carolina fishing license and must remember that there is a 14" minimum size limit in North Carolina waters. It is important to keep in mind that any fish in your livewell under 14" while your boat is in NC waters WILL get you a ticket and disqualified from the tournament. regardless of where you caught the fish. In other words, dont spend half the day fishing the Nottoway or the Blackwater and catching a bunch of 12-1/2 or 13" fish and then decide to run to the Chowan in search of bigger fish. It doesn't matter where you caught the fish....try explaining that to the N.C.game warden!!

Military exemptions!
It has always been Rule 9's policy that you pay for all tournaments whether you fish them or not. This year it was voted in to allow those serving our country an exemption from this Rule. Any current Military member of our club who gets temporarily re-stationed or deployed during the tournament year will not have to pay for any tournaments he misses. We sincerely appreciate the service that our Military members are providing by serving our country and protecting the very freedom that allows us to have a Bass Club such as Rule 9. We currently have several Military among our ranks and are proud to have them as members!

2008 News and Events

The Rule 9 Picnic is Saturday, August 2nd at Russ Hall's house. We will be kicking off this years picnic at noon and will start cooking around 2pm. I just want to touch on a few things you can do to help make this another successful picnic. The final head count is about 74 people and that means about 25-30 cars. Russ has planted trees in the areas we parked last year, so lets be careful not to run them over. The picnic is outside, so kids are not to be running in and out of Russ's house except for bathroom breaks. We could use a few volunteers to stick around afterwards and help clean up. This year we have a few new 'attractions'. We have procured a moonwalk for the kids, but we cant just let them jump their brains out in there because if it gets damaged, the club has to pay for it. We also have a dunking booth. If you want to get in it, bring a bathing suit. In all likelihood, its going to be hot, so prepare for it. If you have a portable shelter, bring it so you have some shade. It is also recommended that you bring your own lawn chairs. If you have a small collapsible table that you think will be useful for eating on, you can bring it as well. Last year we had a pitching contest that went very well, so if you have a favorite rod you like to pitch with, you might want to bring it too. The club is providing the meat, hamburgers and hot dogs as well as the plates and utensils. We will have some soft drinks and some bottled water too, but if you want alcohol, you will need to bring that yourself. We also ask that you bring a covered dish of some sort, such as baked beans, potato salad, green beans, potato chips and desserts. I have put directions to the picnic below. We have several new members this year and you don’t always have time to meet them at our club tournaments. This event will be a great opportunity to do that as well as drop a few scales and tell some lies. As always, if you have any questions, call me or post them on the message board. Look forward to seeing you there.

2007 News and Events

2007 USO Fishing for our Forces Charity Tournament

The date has been set for the 2007 USO Charity tournament. Ironically this years event will be held on November 11th, Veteran's Day. This years tournament will be held on Lake Prince. Once again the USO of Hampton Roads and Tim Ackal, co-founder of Bass Chasers will be assisting us in putting on this event. Most of us know Bass Chasers other co-founder, Charley Workman. Well Charley wont be able to make it this year.....he's currently serving our country in Iraq. I know he would love to be here if he could. So this year's event will be kind of special in that we will be fishing with Charley in mind as well as the rest of the US troops currently serving overseas. I know we all hope and pray for their safe return. This is a great time for a terrific cause as well as a good chance to meet your fellow anglers from the other trails and clubs in the area.

We are still seeking sponsors for this event so if you or someone you know would like to sponsor this event, give us a call or drop us an email and title it "I'd like to Sponsor". Be sure to include any contact phone numbers in your email. We're not looking for a great big pile of money from our sponsors, just donate a gift certificate, a coupon for your business or anything we can use as a door prize.

The Charity event last year was a big success, Rule 9 & Bass Chasers raised over $500 for the USO of Hampton Roads. We gave away a ton of prizes including gift certificates, hats, DVD's and more. The 'goody' bags given out BEFORE the tournament even started, were worth more than the entry fee! This years event should be even better.

Tournament Cancelled (4/14/07)

For only the second time in the history of the club, Rule 9 was forced to cancel a tournament. Diascund Reservoir, scheduled for April 15th, was cancelled because of inclement weather. Rule 9 officials decided to cancel the tournament due to a major Nor'easter accompanied by severe thunderstorms, that is expected to bring 20-30 mph winds with gusts near 50 and dump an expected 2-3 inches of rain. Citing boater safety as the major issue on this trolling motor only lake. No make up date has been announced. In all likelihood the tournament will just have to be scratched from the schedule. There has been no determination from the treasurers office on what will be done with the funds that were set aside for this tournament.
